Story
It was challenging to teach about animal habitats since we had not visited many of them. I started with the temperate forest, as we have been there before. This habitat was the easiest for my son to picture what it looks like. One time, while hiking in the forest, we were fortunate enough to see deer. We also spotted several squirrels, slugs, insects, snakes, and birds.
Observation and Discussion
Take a moment to look at these pictures. What do you see? What do you think about them?

How to Use
Step 1: To learn about the animal habitat of the temperate forest, start by reading books or watching educational videos. There are many options available. We watched this video.
Step 2: Download and print the PDF.
Step 3: First, observe the animals on the printout. If you don’t recognize some of them, ask what they are! Some of these animals live near water, such as rivers or ponds.
Step 4: Look at books or images of temperate forests, then draw a temperate forest on another sheet of paper.
Step 5: Carefully cut out the animals. (*Please help with scissors as needed.)
Step 6: Attach animals to your habitat drawing using glue or tape.
Here is an example that my son did in first grade.
I highly recommend hiking in the forest with kids to observe the details of plants and trees. You might even spot some animals in person!
