This fun game helps students sort words into different categories, just like cleaning up a room!


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Glue or Tape

  • Timer on your phone or a clock to time 3 minutes.


How to Play

Number of Players:  1

Setup: 

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Review all the items together to make sure students understand them before starting the game.

  3. Cut out square pieces and place them face up on the desk.

Playing: 

  1. Imagine your room is messy, and you need to clean it up!

  2. The game board has four category boxes: Toys, Furniture, Clothing, and Arts and Crafts.

  3. The teacher sets the timer for 3 minutes and calls out, "Ready, set, go!"

  4. Players start sorting the items onto the game board.

  5. The timer runs for three minutes. If a player cannot finish in time, they can try again.

  6. Once the teacher reviews the sorted items, glue or tape them down.


Teachers

  • Review each item on the printout with the students before they start the game. They need to understand what each item is before sorting.

  • After the students finish sorting, check to make sure they categorized everything correctly. (See answer key below)

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.5.A: Sort common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.
