Period or Exclamation Mark

Goal

Punctuation: L.K.2.B

This activity helps students understand the difference between a period and an exclamation mark. It focuses on how an exclamation mark shows strong emotion. Our goal is for students to become familiar with using the exclamation mark.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below (If you'd like to show it on the screen, that sounds great, too.)

  • The Punctuation Flags (period and exclamation mark) from the previous exercise.

How to Play

Number of Players:

  • 1 to 5 players or more

Setup:

  1. Download and print the PDF, or show it on the screen.

  2. The players hold two flags: one with a period and one with an exclamation mark.

  3. Sit in a circle with the teacher.

Playing:

  1. Start with number 1. The teacher picks a sentence from the bubble and reads it aloud.

  2. The players quickly guess and raise the flag that matches the punctuation the teacher reads.

  3. The teacher then reviews the flagged responses.

  4. The teacher reviews and move on to the next number.

  5. Keep going!

Reminder:

  • Keep these flags safe for future lessons! ♻️

Dear Teachers

  • When reading, please exaggerate the sentences with exclamation marks.

  • Please make sure to check which flag the students are raising, and help them if they look confused.
