Goal

Inflections and Affixes

We will introduce some commonly used prefixes. This activity aims to help students understand that the prefix "pre-" typically means "before," and adding "pre-" alters the meaning of the word.


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below  (1 set for each student)

  • Scissors or Utility knife Grownup use only. Not for the students! (*Please handle it carefully.)

  • Cutting mat or thick cardboard if you use a utility knife


How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF file.

  2. An adult should cut out the gray box for the students.

  3. Place the word list sheet behind the cut-out paper.

  4. Slowly slide down the cut-out paper.

  5. Check how its meaning changes when you add a prefix.


Teachers

  • Please ensure that adults cut out the gray box for students.

  • Feel free to invite students to share any other words that begin with the prefix "pre-." It would be great to hear their ideas!
