Learning the Suffix ‘-ed’ in a Fun Way


Engaging classroom activity for kindergarten students to learn suffixes and how they change the meaning of root words in a fun way.

Goal

Inflections and Affixes

We will introduce some common suffixes. This activity will help students learn that suffixes are added to the end of a word and change its meaning.


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below  (1 set for each student)

  • Scissors or Utility knife Grownup use only. Not for the students! (*Please handle it carefully.)

  • Cutting mat or thick cardboard if you use a utility knife


How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF file.

  2. An adult should cut out the gray box for the students.

  3. Place the word list sheet behind the cut-out paper.

  4. Slowly slide down the cut-out paper.

  5. Check how its meaning changes when you add a suffix.


Teachers

  • Please ensure that adults cut out the gray box for students.

  • Feel free to invite students to share any words that end with the suffix "-ed." It would be wonderful to hear their ideas!


Common Core

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.4.B (Use the most frequently occurring inflections and affixes (e.g., -ed, -s, re-, un-, pre-, -ful, -less) as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word.)
