Goal

Students will learn how to make 10 with pairs of numbers by playing with scattering Othello pieces.


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • 10 Othello pieces

  • Plastic cup

  • Drawing & coloring tools (crayons, colored pencils, markers, etc.)


How to Play

Number of Players: 

2 players (co-op) *A teacher can join if needed.

Set up:

  1. Download & print the PDF. 

Playing: 

  1. The Player A will put 10 Othello pieces in the plastic cup.

  2. Player A will flip the cup on the floor or table to scatter the Othello pieces.

  3. Player B will count how many black and white pieces there are.

  4. Player B will color the pieces and fill in the boxes with the numbers for the equation on the printout.

  5. Take turns.


Common Core

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.OA.A.3: Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
