Fun Card Game for Learning to Count Forward and Backward


Students playing a card game to practice counting forward and backward from a given number.

Fives (1-10) Card Game

Goal

Counting and Cardinality: K.CC.A.2 / K.CC.A.1

Through pretend play at the clothing store, the student will learn to count by tens and practice using ten-dollar bills.

How to Play

Number of Players: 

  • 2 - 5 Players *A teacher can join as needed.


Setup: 

    1. Remove Joker, Jack, Queen, and King.

    2. Explain and make sure all players understand that Ace (A) is 1.

    3. One player shuffles and distributes all the cards among the players.


Playing: 

    1. All players place every "5" card from their hand onto the table.

    2. Play “rock, paper, scissors” to decide the first player.

    3. The first player places a card in higher or lower order within the same suit (pattern). For example: If there is a 5 of Diamonds, the player can place the 4 or 6 of Diamonds.

    4. Players take turns clockwise around the table.

    5. If a player cannot play a card, they must pass.

    6. Keep playing! The first player to play all their cards is the winner!

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1 : Count to 100 by ones and by tens.

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2 : Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
