Kindergarten math guessing game teaching number recognition and the concept that the last number counted represents the total.

How Many are in the Bag?

Goal

Counting and Cardinality

Students will guess how many items are in the bag and count the objects to find the actual number. They will learn that the last number said when counting tells how many there are.


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below (For tracking points)

  • Paper bag (Any bag could be an alternative)

  • 20 objects (Example: dice, candies, marbles, LEGO bricks, etc.)

  • Writing tools (pencils, colored pencils, markers, etc)


How to Use

  1. One player secretly puts some objects in a bag.

  2. Another player guesses how many are inside and writes the number down.

  3. The first player reveals the objects, then everyone counts them aloud together.

  4. If someone guessed correctly, they get one point.

  5. If nobody guessed right, the first player gets two points.

  6. Take turns! The player with the most points wins.

Common Core

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3 (Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.B (Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.)
