Connecting Numbers, Dots, and Food Images

Kindergarten card game teaching number recognition and quantity matching with food images

Matching (11-20)

Goal

Counting and Cardinality

Students will match number cards with dot cards and item cards featuring common food images. This activity helps them recognize numbers and connect quantities to items.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Number and dot cards from the previous lesson (Number Cards 11-20)

  • Optional: Card sleeves (Pokémon TCG Card sleeves work great!)

  • Optional: Card stock print paper (for sturdier cards)

*We used regular print paper and card sleeves to make the cards sturdier, so they’re easy for little hands to use and reuse!

How to Play

Number of Players:

  • 2 - 4 players (A single player can also play by trying to find all the matching cards as quickly as possible.)

Setup:

  1. Download & print the item card PDF.

  2. Cut out the printouts to create the item cards.

  3. Shuffle the number cards to make a deck and place them face down on the table.

  4. Spread the dot and item cards face up on the table.

Playing:

  1. The first player flips over a number card from the deck.

  2. The player must find a dot and item cards matching the number.

Example: If the number card says 12, the player must find a dot card with 12 dots and an item card showing 12 objects.

  3. If the match is correct, the player keeps all three cards, and the next player takes a turn.

  4. If the match is incorrect, they put the cards back.

  5. Players take turns until all the cards are gone.

  6. The player with the most cards at the end wins.
