Fun Hands on Activities

Learn about primary and secondary colors in a fun and interactive way

An engaging activity where kids mix colors to discover primary and secondary hues—making learning interactive and fun!

Main Idea

Through this engaging activity, kids can learn about primary and secondary colors in a fun and interactive way. Assigning them a "mission" to create specific colors will add challenge and excitement!

Activity Prep

(What we used)

  • Paints

  • Chemistry Lab Tool Toys (Any clear cup works) **I recommend using clear plastic cups or tools; however, if you need to use glassware, please supervise kids and activities to prevent injuries and broken glasses.

  • Paint brush for mixing

  • Rag for wiping and cleaning

How We Did

We previously had a color-mixing activity using Play-Doh, and this time, we'll be getting messy with paints and water!

A playful and hands-on challenge for kids—experimenting with color mixing to unlock exciting new shades!
  1. First, prepare separate containers of primary-colored water: red, blue, and yellow.

  2. Pour each color into individual test tube toys (or clear cup).

  3. Next, place an empty transparent cup where the kids can pour the primary colors into it and mix them.

  4. They'll be able to observe the changes in color as they combine them.

  5. You can encourage them to complete a mission by creating secondary colors like orange, green, or purple.

This activity is a great way to explore color mixing; just be prepared for some mess! I recommend supervising while they enjoy this activity and doing it outside or in a bathroom or kitchen sink for easy cleanup.

Primary Colors and Secondary Colors

Red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors, while secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors. These secondary colors are positioned between the primary colors on the color wheel.
