Category games are a great way for kids to come up with words that belong to the same group while having a blast with their friends! They're not just fun—they’re also fantastic for boosting vocabulary skills!

This fun game will help students can come up with the words in the same category during they are having fun. They might also learn new words from their peers.


Activity Prep

  • No prep needed.


How to Play

Number of Players:

  • Players: 2 (If a student is alone, the teacher can join.)

Playing: 

  1. Decide who will go first.

  2. Players choose one category (for example, foods, animals, colors, shapes, etc.).

  3. The first player says a word that fits the category.

  4. Players take turns saying words.

  5. You can lose in three ways:

    1. If the word does not fit the category.

    2. If you repeat a word that has already been said.

    3. If you cannot think of any words.

  6. You can change the category anytime! Keep playing!


Teachers

  • Please monitor how the students are categorizing and assist them as needed.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.5.A: Sort common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.
