Multiple-Meaning Words

English Language Arts (ELA) - Kindergarten

Same Spelling, Different Meaning!

An anchor chart shows words with the same spelling but different meanings based on context, accompanied by engaging visuals for children to compare and understand.

Multiple Meaning Words

Goal

Nuance & Meaning

We aim to introduce multiple-meaning words, which are words that have the same spelling but multiple meanings depending on the context.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below (If you'd like to show it on the screen, that sounds great, too.)

Teachers

  • Please review the anchor chart with the students and assist them in reading the printout.

  • Discuss how these words are different in meaning. If students don’t know the words on the anchor sheet, please explain them.

Common Core

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.4.A: Identify new meanings for familiar words and apply them accurately (e.g., knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb to duck.)
