A colorful chart to show how prefixes change meaning

An anchor chart illustrating the concept of prefixes shows how adding a prefix to the beginning of a word changes its meaning and creates a new vocabulary.

Prefixes

Goal

Inflections and Affixes

We will introduce some commonly used prefixes. This activity aims to help students understand that prefixes are added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below (If you'd like to show it on the screen, that sounds great, too.)

Teachers

  • Please review the anchor chart with the students and assist them in reading the printout.

  • Please encourage students to share any words with prefixes they know.

Common Core

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.4.B (Use the most frequently occurring inflections and affixes (e.g., -ed, -s, re-, un-, pre-, -ful, -less) as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word.)
