Sentence Rules: Capital Letters & Ending Marks

In This Lesson

The student can recognize that sentences always begin with a capital letter and end with an end mark, such as a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.

Activity Prep

• Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

• Glue or tape

Setup 1

Download and print the PDF.

Setup 2

The teacher will read the cards aloud with students to familiarize them. 

Setup 3

Cut out all the cards with text and sentences.

Setup 4

Spread all cards randomly on the table or floor, face-up.

Playing 2

Sort the cards into the correct column on the game board.

Playing 3

Keep going until all the cards are sorted.

Playing 4

After reviewing with the teacher, glue the cards on the board.

How to Play

Number of Players:  

• The Player: 1 or 2 player (Co-op)

Setup: 

1. Download and print the PDF.

2. The teacher will read the cards aloud with students to familiarize them.  

3. Cut out all the cards with text and sentences.

4. Spread all cards randomly on the table or floor, face-up.

Playing: 

1. If the text starts with a capital letter and ends with a mark, that is a complete sentence. You can check with the checklist below.

   Checklist

   ✅ Does it start with a capital letter?

   ✅ Does it end with a mark ( . ? ! )?

2. Sort the cards into the correct column on the game board.

3. Keep going until all the cards are sorted.

4. After reviewing with the teacher, glue the cards on the board.
