How Suffixes Change Word Meaning

We will introduce some common suffixes. This activity will help students understand that suffixes are added to the end of words and change their meanings.

  • Please review the anchor chart with the students and assist them in reading the printout.

  • Please encourage students to share any words with suffixes they know.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.4.B (Use the most frequently occurring inflections and affixes (e.g., -ed, -s, re-, un-, pre-, -ful, -less) as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word.)

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.4.C (Identify frequently occurring root words (e.g., look) and their inflectional forms (e.g., looks, looked, looking).)
