Hands-on activity: Teaching kids how to count to 10

Goal

Counting and Cardinality

This role-playing game helps students learn to count from 1 to 10. In the game, they act as shoppers buying groceries.


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Number Cards (0-10) from the previous lesson

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • plastic or paper cup (as a shopping basket)

    *We used regular print paper and card sleeves to make the cards sturdier, so they’re easy for little hands to use and reuse!


How to Play

Number of Players: 

  • 2 player *A teacher can join as needed.

  • 1 Caller (Teacher or the students who can call numbers from 1 to 10)

Setup:

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Cut out all the cards. (Please help with scissors as needed.)

  3. Place each item on the table like a grocery store.

  4. The caller sets the number cards and selection cards in face-down stacks.

  5. Each player takes a cup as a shopping basket.

Playing:

  1. The caller draws one card from each deck and announces the number and selection.

  2. The first player shops for the number of items shown on the cards by placing them in their cup (as a shopping basket)

  3. After shopping, the player returns. The caller checks if the player got the correct number of the selected item.

  4. Put back the selection and item cards, then take turns to continue the game.

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1 (Count to 100 by ones and by tens.)

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.A (When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.)
