Big, Small, Tall, Short: Fun Measurement Activities for Kids

Kids engage in a hands-on activity to use measurement words such as big, small, tall, and heavy. They compare items like elephants and feathers to enhance observation skills and early math concepts.

Measurement Words

Goal

Measurement and Data

Kids will explore how to describe objects using measurement words such as big, small, tall, short, long, heavy, and light. For example, they will identify that an elephant is big, tall, and heavy, while a feather is light and small. Students will use these measurement words to describe various pictures.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Optional: Card sleeves (Trading card sleeves work great!)

*We used regular print paper and card sleeves to make the cards sturdier, so they are easy for little hands to use and reuse!

  • Measurement word cards (big, small, heavy, light, tall, long, short) from the previous lessons. These cards are available below.

How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Cut out the cards from the printout.

  3. The teacher holds up one image card. (Example, an elephant)

  4. Students choose all the measurement words that best describe the object (such as big, tall, heavy).

  5. Continue until students match all the image cards.

Teachers

  • Please remind students to keep these cards safe for future lessons! Thank you! ♻️

Common Core

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.1: Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
