Exercise for kindergarten children showing them comparing their height to everyday objects in pictures to practice the words taller and shorter.

Am I Taller or Shorter?

Goal

Measurement and Data

Kids will compare themselves to everyday objects in pictures to practice using words like taller and shorter. From a fridge to a backpack, they’ll learn how size can be described.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Optional: Card sleeves (Trading card sleeves work great!)

*We used regular print paper and card sleeves to make the cards sturdier, so they are easy for little hands to use and reuse!

How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Cut out the image cards.

  3. The teacher holds up one image card (For example, a refrigerator).

  4. Students compare their height to the object shown on the card. For example, is the student taller or shorter than the refrigerator?

  5. Students describe the comparison aloud, using measurement words:

“I am shorter than a refrigerator.”

“A refrigerator is taller than me.”

6. Repeat the activity with the remaining image cards.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
