Exercise for kindergarten children showing them comparing their weight to everyday objects in pictures to practice the words heavier and lighter.

Heavier or Lighter?

Goal

Measurement and Data

Kids will compare themselves to pictures of everyday objects to practice using the words heavier and lighter. From a mug to a car, they will learn how size can be compared.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Optional: Card sleeves (Trading card sleeves work great!)

*We used regular print paper and card sleeves to make the cards sturdier, so they are easy for little hands to use and reuse!

How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Cut out the image cards.

  3. The teacher holds up one image card (For example, a car).

  4. Students compare their weight to the object shown on the card. For example, is the student heavier or lighter than the car?

  5. Students describe the comparison aloud, using measurement words:

“I am lighter than the car.”

“The car is heavier than me.”

  6. Repeat the activity with the remaining image cards.

Common Core

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.1: Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
