Kindergarten Measurement Activity with Everyday Objects

Teach students about measurement by comparing everyday objects in pictures. Use the terms "longer" and "shorter" for a fun, visual math activity suitable for kindergarten!

Longer or Shorter?

Goal

Measurement and Data

Kids will compare themselves to everyday objects in pictures to practice using words like taller and shorter. From a fridge to a backpack, they’ll learn how size can be described.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Optional: Card sleeves (Trading card sleeves work great!)

*We used regular print paper and card sleeves to make the cards sturdier, so they are easy for little hands to use and reuse!

How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Cut out the image cards.

  3. The teacher holds up one image card (For example, a pencil and a pen).

  4. Students compare the length of an object to the pencil.

The teacher asks, “Is a pencil longer or shorter than a pen?”

  5. Students respond aloud, using the correct measurement word:

“A pencil is shorter than a pen.”

  6. Repeat with the remaining image cards.

Common Core

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.1: Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT. K.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
