Count Forward and Keep the Line Moving!


Students work together on a numbered ticket display for a waiting line. They practice counting by identifying the next number in the sequence

Next in line, please! (1-50)

Goal

Counting and Cardinality: K.CC.A.2 / K.CC.A.1

In some stores or offices, people take a ticket while waiting in line. In this activity, parents help to cut out the paper window as a “Now Serving” number display. Then, children will practice counting what number is the next in line.


Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors or Utility knife Grownup use only. Not for the students! (*Please handle it carefully.)

  • Cutting mat or thick cardboard if you use a utility knife


How to Use

Step 1: Download & print the PDF.

Step 2: You will get two sheets: one with a number display screen with a gray box and another with numbers from 1 to 50.

Step 3: An adult should cut out the gray boxes for the students.

Step 4: Place the number sheet behind the cut-out paper.

Step 5: The teacher or a student slides the cut-out paper to reveal a number.

Step 6: Students say the following number in line out loud.


Common Core

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1 : Count to 100 by ones and by tens.

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2 : Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
