Sort and Stick!

Goal

Measurement and Data

Children will explore math and creativity by sorting everyday items, such as leaves, fish, and raindrops into groups, counting them, and gluing them into a colorful collage, all with a hands-on art activity that builds early math skills.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below

  • Scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.)

  • Glue or tape

How to Use

  1. Download and print the PDF.

  2. Cut out the item pictures, such as leaves, fish, and raindrops.

  3. For example, sort the green leaves into a group.

  4. Find the printout sheet that shows green leaves on the top.

  5. Count how many item cards are in the ‘green leaves’ group, then write the number in the box.

  6. Finally, glue item cards where they belong, like sticking green leaves on a tree to make it leafy.

  7. Repeat with the other item cards until you’ve finished all the groups.

  • Time-Saving Tip: Cutting out all the pictures might take a while for them to complete. If your class time is limited, we recommend cutting the images ahead of time to keep the activity moving and fun.

  • Little learners may need extra time to complete multiple art projects. To make things easier, have them store their cutout images in a folder or envelope so they can finish each project one by one at their own pace.
