Marble Run Activity: Build and Play with Kids

Fun Hands on Activities

Building Creativity: Educational Play with LEGO Bricks

Building a marble run with LEGO bricks offers kids an engaging hands-on STEAM activity that combines fun and creativity

Main Idea

After visiting the science museum and seeing the Galton Board, we decided to make a similar project using LEGO bricks.

Activity Prep

(What we used)

  • LEGO Baseplate (10” x 10”)

  • Approximately 11 pieces of 1x4 LEGO bricks

  • Approximately 74 pieces of 1x2 LEGO bricks

  • Approximately 10 pieces of 1x3 LEGO bricks (used because we ran out of 1x2 bricks)

  • Approximately 10 pieces of 1x6 LEGO bricks

  • 2x2, 2x4, or longer LEGO bricks for frames

  • Marbles

*You can change the sizes if you don’t have the same bricks we listed.

How We Played

During our visit to the science museum, my son was very impressed by the machine that illustrates how probability works. I believe it’s called the Galton Board or the Bean Machine. Inspired by that, we decided to create a marble run toy using LEGO bricks.

We needed a lot of LEGO brick pieces to build this marble run! I wish I could create something similar to an actual Galton board. It was fun for my son! You should tilt the board when running the marbles; if it’s too straight, the marbles tend to jump out of the course.
