Pipe Cleaner Craft Ideas for Kids: Cat Tails
Fun Hands-On Activity
Step-by-Step Guide to Cat Tails with Pipe Cleaners
Main Idea
This is a quick and easy activity with kids that uses common household items like cardboard and pipe cleaners. We drew our favorite animals, which are cats, and made their tails using the pipe cleaners.
Activity Prep
(What we used)
Cardboard box
Pipe cleaners
Sharpies or markers
A small screwdriver
How We Made
Step 1. You can draw many cats using markers or Sharpies. Make fun cats, like dancing cats, a cat in a fancy dress, a cat in a litter box, or cats at a party. Be creative, and invite your kids to join in the drawing!
Step 2. (*Be careful!) An adult should do this step. Use a small screwdriver to make a hole for each cat's tail. Make sure the holes are big enough for the pipe cleaners to fit through.
Step 3. Please remind your children that the tips of pipe cleaners can be sharp. Cut the pipe cleaners to your preffered length for cats' tails.
Step 4. Insert pipe cleaners into each hole and tie a small knot on the back to keep them in place.
Step 5. Shape each pipe cleaner to create the tail style you want for each cat. You can also decorate with stickers, glitter, and more
*Safety Note: Always watch children while they craft, especially when using sharp tools.
Making holes in the cardboard with a small screwdriver was the hardest part of this project. Be careful when doing this. My son didn’t want to draw, but he enjoyed sharing his ideas for fun cats. He also loved making cat tails and moving them with the knot on the back. Overall, it was a fun activity for the afternoon.
