Perler Beads Pac-Man Ghost Pendant
Fun Hands on Activities with Kids
Create Retro-Inspired Pixel Art Pendants Using Perler Beads
Main Idea
Have you ever created something with Perler Beads? Perler Beads, also known as fuse beads, are small plastic beads that melt when heated with an iron, then stick together and form shapes. It’s great for making the pixel art. This is a great activity, especially for kids who enjoy arts and crafts or puzzles.
Activity Prep
(What we used)
Red, black, and white iron beads
Iron beads pegboard
Iron
Ironing paper (We used parchment paper)
2 Jump rings (choose the size based on the gold chain you are using. A thinner, larger size is easier to fit through the bead hole.)
1 clasp
Gold plated chain (make sure the jump rings fit)
Jewelry pliers
Story
I just want to share this pendant I made for fun (My son didn't make it). It is inspired by Blinky, the ghost character from the classic arcade game Pac-Man, which I think is super cute. I made it with Perler Beads and added a jump ring and a gold chain.
How I Made
Here is the pattern I created before starting to shape the project. This pattern uses only red, black, and white beads. If the pattern uses about 3 colors and is simple, your kids can have fun making these Perler Beads projects. (**The pattern and pendant I created is for personal use.)
Perler is a well-known brand, but there are other brands of fuse beads available in stores. To avoid confusion about the temperature settings for the iron or other details, I will not go into specifics. Please follow the instructions that come with your bead kit.
You will do about this much when you work on the Perler Beads project:
Prepare your pattern
Place the beads on the pegboard according to the pattern
Heat the iron following the instructions
Cover the beads with iron paper (or parchment paper), ensuring that the shiny, slippery side is facing the beads.
Put the iron on the paper, then wait (Follow the instructions). Don't press too much!
Gently lift the paper to check that all the beads are stuck together.
To make a pendant, you need 2 jump rings, 1 clasp, and a gold-plated chain.
1. Attach one jump ring to the top of the beads art you created, then connect it to the middle of the gold chain.
2. Attach the clasp and a jump ring at both ends of the chain so that you can easily wear and remove it.
After he wore the pendant, he became curious to try! Soon after, he created a lot of pixel art with Perler Beads for many years. It was great for his creativity and also significantly helped him learn to count to 10 and beyond!
