Sorting Activity: Understanding Living vs. Non-Living for Young Learners
Main Idea
In 1st-grade science, we learned about "Living and Non-living Things." We discussed what makes something a living thing. For example, are mushrooms alive? What about the clouds in the sky? We practiced this topic with a sorting activity.

How We Did
1. First, we needed to understand living and non-living things. We read a book and watched some educational videos on YouTube.
Once your children learn about living and non-living things, it's time for an activity. Download and print our PDF files. First, have the students observe their surroundings and draw examples of both.
Then Cut out the items with scissors (*Please help with scissors as needed.) Then sort them into living or non-living things on the sheet for the sorting activity. After sorting them correctly, glue or tape them onto the paper.
I want to share an excellent activity resource to learn this topic. Science World (Science Museum in Vancouver, BC) website. “Living or Non-living?” They have beautiful cards for the examples and great lessons.
