Sorting Vowels and Consonants

English Language Arts (ELA) - Kindergarten

Hands-On Vowel and Consonant Activities for Kindergarten

It’s a fun activity that helps kids understand vowel and consonant differences, recognize sounds, develop phonics skills, and improve early literacy.

Sorting Vowels and Consonants

Goal

Letter Sounds

In the previous exercise, we introduced the concept of vowels and consonants. In this exercise, we want to encourage the students to practice tracing all letters and sorting them into vowels and consonants. Remember that "a, e, i, o, u" are the vowel sounds, and "y" can function as both a vowel and consonant.

Activity Prep

  • Download & print the PDF below (1 set for each student)

  • Writing tools (Pencil, marker, etc)

  • Scissors (*Please supervise or help as needed)

  • Glue or tape

  3. Cut out the letter squares. (Please assist the students with scissors as needed)

  4. Sort the letters into 3 groups: vowels, both ('y', sometimes considered a vowel) and consonants.

  5. Glue or tape the letters onto the sheet 2.

  6. Students can use the completed chart as their personal anchor chart.
